There's a quote that says "shoot for the moon, and if you miss, you'll land among the stars", and that quote might be right.Sometimes, it's better to miss a huge goal and still come closer to it than hitting a small target.

However, we are so often burnt out when trying to achieve our goals and get overwhelmed by it.

Setting a goal should be something that's fun and exciting. It should be something that makes you think really hard on what you want to do in life, so you can be the best version of yourself.

But before we get into the meat of this article, there are a couple of reasons to why you should really have a goal. Then after that, we will get into the five actionable steps that you can do right now so that you can attack your goals with massive success.

Why you should have a goal

Okay, this may not be the first time that you've heard someone talk about the importance of having goals, and it's probably not going to be your last either.

1. Goals give you direction.

Why do you want to go to the gym?

Is it to lose some weight?

Is it to build more muscles?

Is it to shape your body?

You get the point.

If you have a goal when you go to the gym, you will know exactly what you are going to do, since different training provides different results.

Now, that is called a purpose: something you want to chase.

2. Goals help you believe in yourself.

This may sound so obvious, and yet so many people don't realize this.

When you accomplish something, you gain confidence.

That's what setting goals does for you: it fuels your ambition, and when you kill it, you gain confidence.

Nothing's sexier than someone who is both ambitious and confident, isn't it?

How to set your goals properly

Now you know why you should have goals. Let's get into the meat of this article.

1. Be Specific

The first step is to be specific, and we mean extremely specific. Losing weight or being rich isn't specific enough.

But losing 10 pounds or making an extra $1000 per month is.

Your mind craves for clarity, and it's those who set goals with specificity that always end up achieving them.

2. Have a Deadline

When are you going to achieve that goal? Is it within 30 days? 5 years? You set your own deadline.

Without deadlines, you will lose track and procrastinate a lot.

Be realistic with your timeline and do it every day consistently.

3. Create An Action Plan

It's been said that there are so many ways to go to Rome, and it couldn't be more true.

How are you going to lose 10 pounds? Is it by stopping eating junk food?

Is it by going to the gym three times a week?

Write all possible steps that you can take, and choose one or two that will determine the most results.

4. Accountability

This is perhaps the most important one, as there will be so many obstacles down the road.

People will doubt you or hold you back from achieving your goals.

So you want to lose 10 pounds? Great.

Now, can you say no to your friends every time they ask you to eat junk food?

At the end of the day, you are the captain of your life, and if you are not disciplined enough, you will never achieve your goals. Start by taking writing down the list of people you should avoid or spending less time with (at least for certain period of time) so that you can achieve your goals.

5. Track Your Progress

So now you have gone to the gym and said no to all of your friends.

One week passes, have you lost any weight?

If yes, how much have you lost?

How can you do better next week?

What did you do wrong?

These are the questions you should ask so that you know whether you are on track in achieving your goals or not.

Combining all the steps above

Now, combining all of those five steps above, you could come up with this goal-setting template:

"I want to lose 10 pounds in 30 days by going to the gym three times a week. I'm going to spend less time with Nora and Sara because they love to ask me to eat out, and I will also only order pizza twice a month"

Did you notice how we write the sentence?

It's worth repeating: losing 10 pounds in 30 days by going to the gym three times a week.

Notice that we used this template to specify the goal:

Your goal + deadline + your scheduled actionable step + people/things to avoid.

If we break that down to a sentence, it will be this:

Losing 10 pounds (your goal) in 30 days (deadline) by going to the gym three times a week (your scheduled actionable step). I'm going to spend less time with Nora and Sara (people you need to spend less time with) because they love to ask me to eat out, and I will also only order pizza twice a month (things you need to do less).

By having a specific number and deadline, you are more likely to achieve your goals.
